It didn’t take them long to get back to the camp. By the time they arrived, the girls were all outside sitting around the fire. Zehra had a coat around her, though Cailan wasn’t quite sure whose it was. Her clothes were still torn and filthy, though at least they appeared dried from the rain. She’d need some new clothes once they got back to a town or city.

She didn’t move too gingerly, so he supposed her wound was healing just fine. He still worried, he always worried, but he knew she’d be okay. Her eyes glowed as she stared at the fire, her mind far away. Distant but unbothered. Even as they approached, she hardly noticed.

Cailan and Cass got to work skinning and cooking their food, while Murk went around a bend in the lakeshore so he could take a quick bath and clean some of his equipment while he was at it. Aideen brushed the horses, fed them, and wiped down their saddles, which Cailan felt guilty about because in this frantic chase, he’d greatly neglected his own mare. He was lucky that he hadn’t ridden her to her death. As it was, she’d probably hate him forever, but he doubted he would be her owner for long. After all, she was a horse he’d taken from the palace.

Murk eventually waded back their way, his trousers rolled up, his pant legs wet, and his bare chest gleaming in the firelight.

“Water feels amazing if anyone wants a turn now,” he said.

The food was just about ready, so they passed. They could do so after they ate, and after they had the talk that needed having.

They ate in silence for a while, all of them too hungry and too focused on their food to bother with words. The spices did wonders for the meat, as it wasn’t a perfect meal. Even though Cailan, Cass, and Murk all knew how to cook well enough to survive on the road, someone like a cook at an inn who did so professionally would have prepared this a lot better. Even so, they were adequate, and the meat was savory.

Even Zehra seemed to have abandoned her melancholy to wholeheartedly devour her meal. They gave her the whole badger, which she swiftly ate with a speed far exceeding a human’s capacity, though it wasn’t as ravenous as if she’d unhinged her jaw and eaten it whole. She still ate like a person, just…faster.

Once they were mostly filled and content, it was finally time to broach the subject that was weighing heavy over all of them. They remained silent, as no one wanted to start. Cailan thought he ought
